In Session With… Ian Agate

Back to Overview

19th June 2009

Another of SAE Liverpool’s ‘In Session With…’ series took place on Friday 12th July. Students were joined by Ian Agate, who is an SAE Graduate from a few years back. Ian is an engineer based in ‘Studios 301, Stockholm’, and has racked up numerous chart successes in his career. Only last year he recorded a 23-piece string section for the chart-topping song “Hallelujah”, for X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke. Amongst many Swedish and International artists, he also recorded for Westlife and Paul Potts.

Using examples and multi-tracks from projects that he has been involved in, Ian gave a superb lecture on the role of the Tracking Engineer; together with techniques he has used and developed over the years.

Students were enthralled at the audio examples, which included recordings with Drummer Steve Gadd.

College Manager Gavin Attard said:

"Lectures like this are part of what SAE does, and the results are evident in the in the way that the students react to the lectures and the level of work they produce on the course and once they enter the industry"

Here’s what some of the students had to say:

"Many thanks for the opportunity to listen to a very experienced and interesting Audio Engineer, and to hear about his experiences and techniques"

"I found it very informative and it gave me an insight into what is required and expected from an Audio Engineer."

"It was good to see a professional song taken apart, track by track, and to see how it was recorded and put together."
